Vital Villa Summer 2011 Interviews: 1958 villain

How do you do one I hear you cry? Click here and find out! YOUR TURN: The Vital Villa Interviews..

1) When did you become a Villa fan and why?

First home game of the 1958/9 season I was taken along to Villa Park for the first time.

I remember absolutely nothing about the game but, I will never forget the atmosphere, the camaraderie but, above all the smells. Stale beer, Woodbine and Park Drive smoke mingled with the odd pipe. Stale sweat and oil from those who had come straight from work. The rough humour and banter. The old man who handed me a boiled sweet to suck. The rough hands lifting me overhead all the way down to the front of the Holte.

The excitement was palpable, the ooo’s and aaahs of the crowd, the shouts of encouragement, the moans of disappointment. Then all too soon it was over and it was being jostled along with the crowd, out into the street and away home for tea.

How could I not become a Villain after that.

2) Alex McLeish? Your opinion please?

I have nothing against AM. He has been City’s best manager, in that he earned them their best league placing and won them their first cup in 130 years, also gaining them promotion twice. However, interspersed with those accomplishments, he has taken them to relegation twice. Taken along with his days as a manager in the SPL, which again had success interspersed with failure. I think his career suggests inconsistency. He is obviously too good for the championship, as a manager but, I am unsure if he is ready to be a consistent performer at the higher level. I think it is time to keep one’s powder dry and wait and see, before offering any criticism. I wish him luck.

3) Best and worst moments of last season?

Worst moment is a tie between the Man City cup game and away to Liverpool, for fairly obvious reasons I should imagine.
Best moment was outplaying Man Utd for eighty minutes, with a bunch of kids.
Although it ended in the loss of two points, I was so encouraged by the performance put on.

4) Your opinion of Randy Lerner?

My opinion is two tone.
He has been a good owner, backing his managers and re-structuring the club and especially the training facilities. I’ve loved the way he refused to get down and dirty when seeking a manager when MON walked. I thought, at last, someone in football with a bit of class. Only to have that spoiled by the way the appointment of AM was conducted.
It has I think become obvious why he has won nothing with his sports franchises.
He knows nothing about either sport and relies on the advise of others and that is where his business acumen lets him down, in his choice of advisors.
Hopefully he will learn as time goes on, I just hope it doesn’t take him too long.

5) Which player/s should Villa sign this summer?

I think the choice is down to one of four keepers, Given, Robinson, Foster and Dahlin.

Given has been a great keeper but, over the past two or three seasons he has haad a few injury’s. Especially with his shoulders, for this reason alone I think he would be a risk. With his age as well, we will be looking for a keeper before too long.
Robinson has just had his best season for a while and looks back to his best. He could be our keeper for seven or eight years.
Foster is a good young keeper but, I don’t think City would sell to us unless it was at a greatly inflated price.
Dahlin is only 24 and has just had a great season with Malmo, keeping 15 clean sheets. He has had a little trouble with his back but with RL’s knowledge of good sports Drs in America, it should be something that could be fixed easily enough.

We also need at least another leftback, holding midfielder and winger.

I wouldn’t mind us having a look at Pierre Bengtsson for leftback. He plays for Copenhagen at the moment. He has a really good leftfoot and can also play in left central midfield.

Holding midfield is difficult but we have been said to have had interest in Mariga from Inter.

Winger has to be N’Zogbia please. He can play rightwing, leftwing and leftback. I think he could also play that odd position we call ‘in the hole’.

6) Stewert Downing, if he really wants out, should Villa refuse to let him go, or get shot?

If Downing wants out he should hand in a transfer request. Until then he’s our player. If he does hand in a request then he should be sold to any club that meets our valuation.
It’s no good holding on to a player who wants out.

7) Favourite current player?

Several to be honest.
Bent for obvious reasons.
Albrighton for what he has plus his potential to get better, as long as he’s played on the right.
Bannan. This player excites me with his potential, although I don’t think he’s been played in his best position yet. I would love to see him playing at the point of a diamond in midfield, or ‘in the hole’.
Lichaj for his neveer give up attitude. I love the way he’ll get beat and learn from it.

8) Favourite all time player/s?

How long do we have?
I could be writing a list from now until Xmas. So here are a few highlights.

Gerry Hitchens
Peter McParland
Charlie Aitken
John Sleeuwonhook
Leighton Phillips
Allen Evans
‘Sid’ Cowans
Mark Walters
Tony Daley
Brian Little
‘Chico’ Hamilton
Frank Pimblett – also my biggest disappointment.
John Gidman
Ray Houghton
Paul Merson.

9) What do you expect us to do/ finish this season?

Premier – 8th – 12th
FA Cup – 4th round.
Carling – quarter finals.

10) You can ask yourself any question you want about Villa and what is your answer.

The answer is NO.
The question was, ‘ In my lifetime will I see Villa win the league again?’

11) Right, lets lower the tone…which celebrity would you most like to bang and which (male I would think) celeb would you most like to thump!?!

So many to choose from. For old times sake Felicity Kendal. The way I feel today, Marishka Hargitay. Those two would get the banging, while I would love to thump Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand for being so up themselves.
