Vital Villa Summer 2011 Interviews: Col8

How do you do one I hear you cry? Click here and find out! YOUR TURN: The Vital Villa Interviews..

1) When did you become a Villa fan and why?

I was born in Rodway Street Hockley, it`s gone now but it was by the Three Horse Shoes behind Newtown Row, those were the days when Newtown Row was a shopping area with a vibrant community. Villa Park was just a walk down from 5 Ways Aston. My big brother Terry took me to a pre-season friendly against Blues of all people for my first ever game. It was different in those days the supporters from both clubs entered the Holte End from different sides of the ground and the steps in the middle separated the fans. It is a memory that stayed with me to this day, as a kid getting pushed from side to side in a mass of bodies was scary. I remember my brother sitting me on the bright red crush bars to try and keep me safe. I remember after the game Villa and Blues supporters heading up town

2) Alex McLeish? Your opinion please?

In some ways I feel sorry for the new manager, I can not think in all my years of a manager coming to Villa Park and receiving such a torrent of abuse, personally he will like every other manager in every league live and die by his results. I thought he did poorly at St Andrews, I did not like the way they played and although he brought them their first trophy in my lifetime it was a poisoned chalice. Aston Villa are not in the same league as Bloose, we will not see Premier League survival as a “result” after last seasons debacle which sits firmly with Randy Lerner and Mr. Faulkner this season the club needs to be restored to the top of the second league of clubs in the Premiership behind the top 5.

3) Best and worst moments of last season?

On the terrace after beating Liverpool 1-0 in the final game of the season and watching the scoreboard for other results. The worst moment was listening to Houllier tell the Villa supporters what a wonderful club they were, that`s when he lost the supporters and I would have thought some of the players.

4) Your opinion of Randy Lerner?

He is a gentleman, he supported Monny to the hilt, he also supported Houllier by buying Bent for £19,000,000 because we were in the sh*t. He has transformed the club behind the scenes Investing millions of his own money in the training ground and making sure the Infrastructure for supporting player training is the best in the Premiership. Some will knock him saying he is only here for the money but football is a business and whilst we would all like to be Man City have unlimited funds Villa is a business and must spend to compete and not be a Portsmouth or Leeds United.

5) Which player/s should Villa sign this summer?

Gary Cahill, he should never have been allowed to leave. He has been class for Bolton Wanderers since joining them. I am amazed Manyoo or Arsenal have not yet gone in for him. Dirk Kuyt from Liverpool was linked and rumored last season he has proved under King Kenny he would have been a quality signing.

6) Stewart Downing, now he has gone, were Villa right to get shot of him or should they have kept him against his wishes?

People will complain of the club being a selling club but as I said earlier its also a business these days, £20,000,000 is only part of the equation when selling a player of his standing, there`s also 2 years wages which could be as much as £7,000,000 plus bonuses etc. So in reality £30 million quid for Stewie, good business for the club, I just hope Marc Albrighton and Barry Bannan live up to expectations and can step up to the plate.

7) Favourite current player?

Bent, he brings so much more to the team, his ability to make things happen, running off the ball dragging defenders out of position etc

8) Favourite all time player/s?

Charlie Aitken is everything a footballer should be, his record at Aston Villa will stand the test of time. In days when player chase the green back before they chase the ball he is a Villa Hero through and through (I know threes more money in the game now and it`s a different era etc). Those who know of him will not have a single bad word to say of his career at Villa Park.

9) What do you expect us to do/finish this season?

Premier 7th or 8th
FA Cup: No Idea
Carling: No Idea

10) You can ask yourself any question you want to about Villa and what is your answer?

Q. What would have happened if Ron Saunders had stayed at Villa in 1981.

A. Aston Villa would have gone on to dominate the domestic leagues, cups and won the European Cup several times. Doug Ellis would never have become Chairman of the club.

11) Right, let`s lower the tone… which celebrity would you most like to bang and which (male I would think) celeb would you most like to thump?

At my age I have more chance of banging my big toe of the coffee table.

Thump that scrotum bag who invented the Vuvzela and ruined the World Cup.
