Vital Villa Summer 2011 Interviews: Melski
How do you do one I hear you cry? Click here and find out! YOUR TURN: The Vital Villa Interviews..
1) When did you become a Villa fan and why?
I played a lot of county football when I was younger and with one such team we did a tour when I was 8 years old. We visited Villa Park as our first stop. It was only the second ground I had ever been to (Oxford United`s Manor Ground being the first) and I was mesmerised. We were given a tour and had a chance to run out on the pitch and kick some footballs. I came out, got passed the ball and thumped the ball into the back of the net at the North Stand then ran to the corner to celebrate. From that moment onwards I wanted to play for Villa and they`ve been my team ever since.
2) Alex McLeish? Your opinion please?
Interesting choice. I actually quite liked the appointment. Even though the likes of Rafa Benitez, Mark Hughes and others had a better record in the Premier League, they had all spent a huge amount of money and barring Rafa`s first year (With mostly Gerrard Houllier`s team) – didn`t deliver much. McLeish has always set his team out to defend well which is something that we were appalling at last season. I am also impressed with his transfer activity. When you think of the huge pull that Birmingham had (?!….) he brought in some decent players and developed a few as well. I`m also encouraged by the early names being bandied about (Given, N`Zogbia and Parker).
3) Best and worst moments of last season?
Best Moment – signing Darren Bent. That was the day that we stayed up in my opinion and also was a clear statement of intent. You could see that Houllier was trying to build something great and that was undoubtedly the pinnacle of his tenure.
Worst moment – that Zigic goal in the Carling Cup. Enough said – it still makes me angry every time I think about it.
4) Your opinion of Randy Lerner?
I think he`s a class act. Some of the small things he has done since being in charge (Holte End Pub, Flags at European games) have been massively fan focused. I know a lot of people want us to spend hundreds of millions of pounds to challenge the likes of Man City and Spurs but they are not realistic in my opinion. We have to blend good experienced players with youth and from those foundations we will grow stronger and start to challenge higher up the table. The appointment of McLeish really confirms that ethos.
5) Which player/s should Villa sign this summer?
I was disappointed that we couldn`t get Kyle Walker as he was excellent last season so we do need a good right back alongside Luke Young. Someone like Micah Richards but I don`t think we have a chance. Hutton from Spurs would do a decent job. I also would like to see Matthew Etherington as I think he is vastly underrated. Finally – someone to play as a foil alongside DB9 – I quite liked the look of Nikola Kalinic from Blackburn in the few games I saw of him but I don`t think he scored too many goals. I would therefore take a punt on Hugo Rodallega. If he can score 9 goals at Wigan – he`s got to have something going for him.
6) Stewart Downing, if he really wants out, should Villa refuse to let him go or get shot?
Let him go for £20M and not a penny less. He was excellent last season but it still amazes me how someone so clearly one footed can do so well in the Premier League. As long as we get the full transfer free to re-invest – fine. Cheerio.
7) Favourite current player?
I`m a big fan of James Collins. Big strong defender who scores his fair share of goals. I would have him as my first choice centre back alongside Cuellar/Dunne. I also think Ciaran Clark is going to be an excellent footballer in the next few years.
8) Favourite all time player/s?
Dion Dublin, Martin Laursen. Two players who wore their hearts on their sleeves and gave all they could for Villa. Also who could forget Dion`s ‘challenge` with Robbie Savage!
9) What do you expect us to do/finish this season?
Premier 8th .. 7th if we hit the
FA Cup – quarter finals. Probably lose to ManUre at Old Trafford.
Carling Cup – Winners. I`m an optimist. A nice easy early run then some good home fixtures to see off the big boys in the later stages.
10) You can ask yourself any question you want to about Villa and what is your answer?
Q: Will Villa win a trophy in the next 5 years.
A: see the previous answer!
11) Right, lets lower the tone… which celebrity would you most like to bang and which (male I would think) celeb would you most like to thump!?!
Eva Mendes and Sepp Blatter…
