Vital Villa Summer 2011 Interviews: Mike Field

How do you do one I hear you cry? Click here and find out! YOUR TURN: The Vital Villa Interviews..

1) When did you become a Villa fan and why?

Too long ago to remember now, you know I’ve turned 30 right? All my addled brain remembers was it was back in the days of God, Platty, Daley and GT. Family were split between Blues and Villa, and thankfully I came out on the right side.

2) Alex McLeish? Your opinion please?

Not the man I wanted, nor expected to be honest. A very brave gamble from the board that I don’t think will go wrong, but as I’ve said many times I only rate him as a 6-10 place manager and I think he’ll do that very solidly indeed. But the man to break through the top 6 ceiling we found ourselves at, I don’t believe so.

Would’ve preferred somebody younger who would’ve been looking to build a legacy here, learn from their mistakes and improve themselves with us.

He’s not that man for me – although I obviously hope to be wrong.

3) Best and worst moments of last season?

Best moments, erm. For me it’s got to be Bent and the promotion of the young lads as I do expect big things from them, and last season I don’t believe they did any worse than the so called professionals for large parts of the season.

Worst moments, everything else.

4) Your opinion of Randy Lerner?

Still happy as I don’t believe they have made any real or major mistakes as of yet, but concerns are slipping in and it’d be nice to see a good bounce where faith can be fully restored in the sense of ‘we might not get there, but we are going to try’.

I see the sense behind Houllier even though it didn’t work out as hoped. I can see the sense behind McLeish even though I don’t think he’ll be enough, and I’ve no concerns with getting top dollar for players that don’t want to be here anymore.

It’s hasn’t however been a great 12 months, and as Randy and the board have always said…actions speak louder than words. So hopefully the smaller mistakes in my opinion, and the decisions that I can’t really agree on – even if I see it from their side and can see some sense – are over now, and we can get back on track properly and get some positive vibes around the place again.

5) Which player/s should Villa sign this summer?

I think we’ve got a reasonable core of a squad, especially now we’ve added Given between the sticks. I want us to go out and scalp the best youngsters available though and give them a shot. Build for the future by getting them in now, maybe loaning back for a season and start doing it that way.

I’m not interesting in big name signings, let’s start building a squad that can be our future for the next decade if they prove good enough rather than paying over the odds for players who aren’t exactly spectacular.

6) Stewart Downing, he really wanted out, should Villa have refused to let him go?

We got a great price for him, but I can’t wish him the best for the future. Far better off without the mercenary, bailed on Boro, bailed on us despite coddling him whilst he was injured…maybe Liverpool will get more than 25 odd decent games before his agent decides he’ll be better off at another club or abroad.

I can’t believe he only got 9 assists if the stats I saw were right, flattered to deceive hugely.

7) Favourite current player?

Can’t really say I’ve got one. I’ve high hopes for Albie, Clarkie, Bannan, Delboy and the Weeman to name just five, but I think my favourite current player will be my vote for MotM after each game.

8) Favourite all time player/s?

God. Then we’re into Cowans, Teale, Taylor, Bozzie etc.

9) What do you expect us to do/finish this season?

Attempt to play football and for all 11 on the pitch to attempt to earn their wages would be a nice start after last season.

I’d take 8th and taking the cup’s seriously. I think, if I see one more Villa manager take his ball away from a Cup competition I’m going to ram Vital’s servers up their arse.

10) You can ask yourself any question you want to about Villa and what is your answer?

Who the f**k is Doris?
F****d if I know.

11) Right, lets lower the tone… which celebrity would you most like to bang and which (male I would think) celeb would you most like to thump!?!

Bang – you limit me to one?
Thump – you again limit me to one?
