Vital Villa Summer Interview: AV-Damo

AV-Damo steps up for the Vital Villa members interviews.

Q: When did you become a Villa fan and why?

It was the early 90`s. I`d just left school, and returned to the UK (Dad was in the RAF and I spent most of my younger years in Germany), I went to college and met a good mate who`s dad had season tickets for the Museum club/suite (for corporate/business entertainment purposes), but he never used them, so he always gave the tickets to his son and me. The first game I can really remember was at home to Liverpool, Dean Saunders getting 2 against his former club on his Villa home debut, and Ronnie Rosenthal hitting the crossbar in front of an open goal (in front of the Holte?) from 3 yards out ! I had a season ticket for a few years, but unfortunately, as I got a little older, family/work/travel commitments meant that was no longer viable, and I am now a ‘pay as you go` type Villa fan (with my two kids) for as many games a season as possible.

Q: The season just gone, good bad or ugly? What did you think of it?

Good, definitely good ! Wembley twice (what an embarrassing stadium that is!), battling for CL up until the end, beating Manchester United at Old Trafford for the first time in god knows how many years. There were some bad/ugly bits but I choose to put my claret and blue specs on and block them out.

Q: Best and worst moment of last season?

Best, for me it has got to be the Carling Cup Semi final, What a night that was with highs and lows, despair and euphoria, all in in one incredible 90 minutes. And the scenes at the final whistle were just brilliant. (I only went onto the pitch to fetch my son … honest !!).
Worst, I sit opposite a Chelsea fan at work, so the Monday morning following the Chelsea debacle wasn’t particularly pleasant.

Q: James Milner… is he off do you think? If so, what price (realistically) should Villa hold out for? If off to Man City, which – if any – of their players would you want in exchange?

Heart says NO, Head says YES. Unfortunately I don`t think there`s any ‘loyalty` in football anymore (apart from us fans!) and I think that players think of football as their own personal business venture and really it all comes down to how much cash they have in their back pocket, so as much as I`d like Milly to buck the trend and show loyalty and pledge the rest of his playing career (and beyond) to the Villa, I`m not sure he will, and I suppose he`s quite within his rights to go somewhere else to earn more dough if he wants to. (being pragmatic about it, I`m sure that`s what 99% of us would do!) That said, if Man City or Chelsea or anyone else want to spend £30m of silly money that we could sensibly use, I guess I`d take it.

Q: What signings (type of player or specific name/s if you wish) would you like to see Villa buy this summer?

My views are the same as everyone else’s, we need a Striker and a Flair player, a proven 20-a-season Goalscorer is something all the top teams have and we haven`t had for years, and a midfield playmaker to unlock a defence that`s parked the bus and is playing for a draw would be great, I`ve absolutely no idea who those players should be, and thankfully it`s not my job to decide … maybe we already have them in Delf and Delph, but we just don`t know it yet !!

Q: Where do you stand on Martin O’Neill (I don’t mean literally, that would be assault) ?

Brilliant but frustrating ?! I like him, I think he`s a top manager, he`s full of character, and is undoubtedly a highly respected individual by his peers, but I do think he can be stubborn to the point of self destruction sometimes. Mind you, I don`t think I`d swap him for anyone else at the moment!

Q: Your opinion of Randy and the board?

What can you say that hasn`t already been said ? The fact that so many teams respect and admire us, and lesser teams (no disrespect meant) aspire to be like us speaks volumes for the job that Randy and the board have done.

Q: Favourite current player and favourite all time player/s

Current Player, tough one …. It`s a toss up between Dunne and Milner. Dunne was an absolute bargain and was brilliant for us last season. Milner because … well just because he`s Milner really, do I need to explain ? Favourite all time player would be ‘God` himself, Lord McGrath !

Q: Do you expect progress next season, difficult to answer before the transfer window closes I know?

Errr, OK, I`ll probably get slated for this but …. No! The obscene amounts of money in football these days worries me, and I genuinely think that there are other teams with wealthier owners prepared to risk all and splash the cash for instant success, which is going to make it very difficult for us to compete they way we did last season. Having said that, I do think we`ll make a decent fight of it, and I honestly believe that the way Randy conducts his business is sustainable, and will lead to future glories when all around us are in ruins.

Q: Right, lets lower the tone… which celebrity would you most like to bang and which (male I would think) celeb would you most like to thump!?!

Bang = I wouldn`t mind taking a bite out of Charlize Theron.

Thump = Anyone and everyone from ‘pineapple dance studios`
