Godzvilla shares his views in our Vital Villan Interview
1 – How long have you been a Villa fan and how did you first get the Claret & Blue faith?
I come from a long line of Villa supporters carrying on the family tradition of attending my first game on my fifth birthday. My grandfather was a Villa supporter, he took my dad on his 5th birthday, my dad took me on mine and I took my kids to the game nearest to theirs (June birthdays!). I think being a Villa supporter is a genetic thing – we all have this highly evolved gene!!
2 – What was your first game?
My first game, although I don’t remember much about it was against Arsenal in December 1964 which we won 3-1. I do remember most vividly, my dad talking to me at the bottom of the steps before climbing into the upper tier of the Trinity Road Stand. He said ‘You are about to experience something which will stay with you for the rest of your life’. With that he took my hand and led me up for my first view of the inside of Villa Park. I just remember it being massive and being surprised that the pitch was green! Hey, there were no colour televisions in 1964!!!
3 – What is your most memorable moment as a Villa fan?
Only one? I think it has to be the final whistle in Rotterdam. The realisation that Villa were Champions of Europe was so overwhelming that even today I fill up when I talk about it!!
4 – And the worst moment?
The day Ron Saunders left. I idolised him as a manager and it was such a shock!
5 – Who are your favourite current Villa players?
I’ve always loved big, bruising centre forwards so it has to be John Carew. I’m also a fan of Wilfred Bouma – unassuming, just gets on with his job and loved his goal against Newcastle last season – my goal of the season by a mile!!!
6 – Which former player/s are your ultimate heroes?
In no particular order, Brian Little was exciting to watch and his partnership with Andy Gray was a joy to behold. Andy Lochead, Paul McGrath and to prevent this list reading like a who’s who of Villa Players, David Platt.
7 – Which player do you think was the worst to ever put on the team colours?
No doubt – Geoff Vowden. He was the first player wearing a claret and blue shirt I ever gave stick to and I was only about eleven!!
8 – What is the best goal you have seen Villa score and which is your favourite game?
Gotta be Dalian Atkinson’s against Wimbledon. The only goal which came close was Alan McInally’s goal against Millwall in the cup – a superb 80 yard solo run.
1. European Cup Final
2. League Cup Semi-Final, 2nd leg against Tranmere Rovers.
3. The 5-1 thrashing of Birmingham City last season – I thought I’d died and gone to heaven!!
9 – Best away ground visited?
Does it count if it wasn’t against Villa? I was at a Rangers v Celtic derby on New Years Day where there were 104,000 in the crowd!! It was at Ibrox and it was a fantastic atmosphere. Where Villa were involved, I used to enjoy going to Loftus Road.
10 – Who would you like to see Villa sign this summer?
We really need a minimum of six players. Two goalkeepers, a couple of defenders, a strong midfield player and a striker to provide some variation up front. Name wise? David Bently would be nice and why not offer Liverpool £12m for Gerrard so he can come and play with his mate Gareth? At least we can afford him!!
11 – What are your predictions for us this season in the:
a) League 5th
b) Europe last eight
c) Carling Cup last eight
d) Fa Cup Win the damn thing!!! It’s the only domestic trophy I’ve never seen Villa win!
12 – What is your opinion of Martin O’Neill?
I really, really want him to be the most successful manager we’ve ever had. So far so good but I’m just a bit twitchy over the seeming lack of urgency shown in the transfer market. I’m doing as I’m told though, I’m being patient.
13 – What is your opinion of Randy Lerner and the new board?
Well, Our Randy has been like a breath of fresh air at Villa Park hasn’t he? The feelgood factor is back and so are the fans who had been driven away by the old school regime. I’m impressed, very impressed!
14 – Where do you sit at Villa and are you a season ticket holder?
There’s only one place to watch football at Villa Park and that’s from The Holte End. Since I was about thirteen I’ve watched my football from behind the goal and apart from being the best view of the game, if I sit anywhere else, we lose!! I left the confines of my Holte twice last season, Leicester in the cup and Wigan – I rest my case!! I work shifts and work four weekends in eight so a season ticket isn’t really practical.
15 – And finally (stolen without shame from Vital Arsenal!) if you could invite 4 people connected to Villa, living or dead, to a dinner party, who would they be? And you can add one bit of top totty as well to make the party go with a ‘bang’ ;o)
I would invite Randy Lerner, William McGregor, Charlie Aitken and Dennis Mortimer. For the piece of top totty? Helen Chamberlain. We’ll be gassing about football so it would have to be a woman who would join in and not keep trying to change the subject!!
With thanks to Godzvilla.
