Ron Vlaar was delighted to make his competitive debut against West Ham, however, starting with a loss was not in Roncrete’s plans.

Speaking to the Official Site Vlaar admitted that the loss totally took the shine of his debut for him and he wants those three points in our next game.

‘It was a proud day for me because it was my debut for Villa and it was something I had been looking forward to, but of course the result is the most important thing and obviously that did not go our way, it is a disappointment. I was desperate to get off to a winning start but hopefully my first game at Villa Park will be a victory.’

It was a very competent debut from Vlaar and apart from a couple of hiccups – and I know some disagree – I thought the defence was quite tight, especially the growing partnership between Vlaar and Clark which I thought showed more promise, even though there has to be more to come from both of them.

Vlaar realises this as he talks about the team showing improvement against Everton and both creating more chances, but also taking the chances we have, and whilst he knows he can chip in with goals from set pieces as the season, he quite confidently says his job is getting the club clean sheets, not scoring up front.

‘The manager wants us to improve our play and we have to do that, we had some chances to score but were not quite there. Against Everton we must do better.’

Adding about Clarkie.

‘Ciaran and I are now building an understanding, it will take a few games before we develop a complete understanding but this is natural of course.’
