Watkins Continues To Rise Under Emery At Villa – Match Stats

|

It’s been a disappointing time of late for Unai Emery at Aston Villa. We went into today’s clash with struggling Everton at Goodison Park on the back of three straight defeats, and they had all been pretty heavy defeats at that.

The Everton showing was far from fantastic, and arguably the hosts had the better, or at least the overall chances on the day, but with the defence holding firm – including Tyrone Mings clearing off the line – whenever they did get through, they simply couldn’t best World Cup winning goalkeeper Emi Martinez.

That’s not to say we didn’t have chances of our own, and Ollie Watkins forced Jordan Pickford into a good stop of is own as he turned the ball onto the woodwork, but it came together for us in the second half and with John McGinn drawing a foul from former Villan Idrissa Gueye, Watkins made no mistake from the spot to score his fifth consecutive league goal, and with under ten minutes left on the clock, Emi Buendia made it 2-0 to ensure we returned home with all the points.

Level on points with big spending Chelsea now – few would’ve thought that a couple of months ago.
