We Did Try For Players In January

Strange story, but Setanta are carrying quotes from Radiu Afolabi who says he was inches away from signing for us in the window.

The 28 year old Nigerian international has said that Sochaux blocked the move, despite the fact he only had 5 months left on his contract.

The defender will obviously be out of contract at the end of the season, so maybe it’s a ‘come and get me’ plea?

Speaking originally to Tide Sports, he said:

‘Aston Villa came asking about me in January but to my surprise, Sochaux blocked the transaction demanding €1.5million (£1.4 million) to release me.

‘I was very furious about it. Since just five months were remaining on my contract, I see no reason why the management did not allow me to go.

‘Aston Villa offered to have me on loan and they were expected to pay my salary until the end of the season.

“This would have been a logical thing for Sochaux to accept because as is it now, at the end of the season I will leave and Sochaux will have nothing on me.’

I’ve no idea what kind of player he is or whether he would have improved us but at least it gives us something else to talk about and we gee ourselves up for a win at Man U.
