With Tuesday evening seeing Aston Villa get back to winning ways as we hosted Rotherham United at Villa Park, the return of some optimism – or dare I say simply some relief – was hugely noticeable within the fan base.
Five points off Leeds United who occupy top spot following Marcelo Bielsa’s unexpected beginning to Championship life should put some things into perspective. We’re in the mix and despite seeming to start the season on the front foot with a desire to actually entertaining, that quickly slipped into our usual defensive, boring, mindset and we paid the price.
Rotherham wasn’t a classic, we didn’t dominate but for those calling them the worst side in the division, they have the same numbers of wins as we do!
We have no divine right to slap teams like Rotherham off the pitch, but having gone with two up front as opposed to our usual eleven at the back formation, was anyone surprised to see improvement and see that we were a little more at it?
It’s a mindset thing. I felt Bruce deserved this season as his ‘make or break’. He dealt with defence and years of decline and got us to within a game of promotion where usual failings came to the fore. This season has to be about performance, entertainment and attack.
We have the players, play to their strengths, don’t hold back…have the confidence we will be better as opposed to constantly watching our own backsides given the fear that instils over mistakes and errors.
When we attack we always look better, when we go defensive, shock horror we make basic errors.
I know the game is a bit more complicated than that, but surely someone on the coaching staff has noticed the trend?
Rotherham has to be the step back in the right direction and the first of 100’s if Bruce wants this job in four years. We won’t win them all or always get what we deserve but this comment following the game was spot on.
We shouldn't av to scrap wins we should be playing better than that..

Limited to the numbers of years I’ve been on the planet and better aware of football – why do fans like me love GT, BFR, BL, JG and MON season one?
For large parts it was exciting, there was no fear, a spirit and we believed we could beat anyone.
That’s the ‘Villa Engine’, not ‘don’t concede first’.
