Andreas Weimann has talked about his new wide role in our attack, and he’s said he thinks he starting to reap the rewards of the freedom it gives him to ghost in to positions.
Speaking to the Official Site Weimann said the formation came into it’s own against Manchester United, and as the players become more accustomed to it, the goals should start flying in.
‘Obviously, I’d say my best position’s up front, but I really like this role because what the gaffer wants me to do is come inside and make runs in behind Christian. I like it and it’s worked in the last couple of weeks, so hopefully I can keep my place there. It sometimes let me sneak in unnoticed – that’s what happened for my second goal against United, I’ve had a few chances lately, a couple against Sunderland were saved.’
There was also that header against United, that just needed placing to either side of De Gea, so he’s getting into the positions more now and hopefully that will equal more goals as the games come. Weimann, as ever, had praise for his partners in the goals.
‘The first goal was brilliant work from Christian, unbelievable. It was brilliant play from Gabby down the left, the ball came across and I just put it in.’
As for that header, he added:
‘As soon as I headed it I thought it was in, but I just got in front of him so I couldn’t put any direction on it. I hit it hard enough but unfortunately I couldn’t put it in the corner.’
