Andy Weimann will step up his rehab on Monday after having a protective brace removed from his knee, and will resume running as he looks to be fit to impress the new gaffer.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail our wee little Austrian said he would be working hard to strengthen his medial ligament after injuring his knee in a clash with former colleague Brad Friedel after making a name for himself last season, he wants to play an important role in the first team next time round:

‘It’s not too bad, I had four weeks off because I had the brace, so I was resting to allow it to heal on its own. Now I’m getting back into it and building up my fitness. They said it would be eight weeks, which would take it to a week before the start of pre season, so if everything goes well, I should be fit. At the moment it feels perfect and I start running on Monday.’

Weimann has reported to Bodymoor Heath two weeks before his team mates such is his desire to be as fit as possible for pre season, but he knows he rehab will depend on what happens when he hits the track:

‘I’ll probably know more when I start running, but I’ve been working on the bike and the cross trainer and haven’t felt anything so I’m hopeful everything will be fine.’

Despite being in and around Bodymoor, Weimann has yet to cross paths with new manager Paul Lambert but he’s looking forward to meeting the new man at the helm, and impressing him:

‘I haven’t met him yet but I’m looking forward to it. It’s a fresh start for everyone and I can’t wait to get going really. I started playing in the first team last season and got a taste for it. I want to get more of, so hopefully I can impress in pre season and get a few chances.’

It will be a big season for Andy, and Lambert could well be the man to bring the best out of him. We know his movement as a poacher is second to non, but he has all the physical attributes nececssary to be a thorne in Premiership defences. Play him right, and feed him the service and we could all see on a regular basis what Darren Bent has been banging on about from the training pitches.
