Midfielder Ashley Westwood has looked ahead to our trip to Wembley this weekend, and as well as praising a number of his colleagues, he picked out Jack Grealish as potentially being key to our chances of success.
Speaking to the Official Site ahead of the game, Westwood knew we were going into the game as underdogs but he didn’t think we had anything to fear.
‘Jack Grealish a special talent and a great lad and I’m sure he could be our match-winner at the end of the day. He’s a Villa fan. I think he used to stand in the Holte End. To have a homegrown talent in your team on FA Cup final day is what you want. The way he played in the semi-final was amazing. He was man of the match and for a 19-year-old that shows what ability he’s got. He believes in his ability and so he should. He’s a special talent.’
Westwood went on to say that with his talent and potential, if he keeps his head down and keeps working hard, and can consistently produce performances like that he’s got the proverbial ‘world at his feet’.
In general though Westwood believes we have a good team here and that we do have the quality to take the game, even if we haven’t had the best of seasons again.
‘Overall, I believe we have got a real good team here. The pace we’ve got is frightening. We have the likes of Fabian breaking from midfield, Clevs is adding goals to his game – I’m sure Arsenal will be wary of that. On our day, if we perform as we can do, we’ll match anybody. We know how good we are.’
Going on to talk about the ‘internationals’ we have in the side, he went on to name check Christian Benteke and what he offers us.
‘Christian’s a real handful for anyone. I’m sure they’ll be having sleepless nights about him.’
In his own pre game interviews, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger obviously picked out Benteke as being a major threat for us – but I can’t be bothered to quote him!
‘The pressure will be on them. They’re looking to win a trophy. I’m sure the gaffer will have a game plan, we’ll stick to that and I’m sure it’ll do the job for us.’
As for the Premier League season itself.
‘Staying in the Barclays Premier League was massive. The games in the Premier League brought more pressure for us than the FA Cup final. We’re going there to Wembley to give it a real good go and win the game. We think we can win. We believe we can beat them. If people are saying we’re underdogs, we’ll relish that. The last two performances have been poor by our standards. But now we aim to go out there and give a good performance and bring the trophy home.’
