With Aston Villa’s clash at the weekend against Sheffield Wednesday having one incredible moment of skill in the shape of summer signing John McGinn’s spectacular left-footed volley to give the Villa Park crowd something to shout about, former member Melon Donkey came up with a cracking idea.

What’s the best goal you have seen at Villa Park?

We’ve had some standout goals over the years whether you judge them by individual moments of skill, a great piece of teamwork, to the downright cheeky and the ‘I can’t believe he tried that’.

We’ve even had the odd ‘what might have been’ when you think back to Luc Nilis’ strike against Chelsea and his unfortunate injury.

It’s pointless one person even attempting to list a top ten of corkers as everyone will have forgotten some, so I’m going to lean on the forum here, like Melon, to see what instantly comes to their minds.

Melon Donkey – Dean Saunders v Ipswich in 1992 keeps springing to my mind as the best I have seen live. But after today. I’m not sure? Link

JW1985 – Hmmmm. I’ll always remember Angel’s stunner vs Chelsea in the League Cup. Luc Nillis also against Chelsea ranks high as well.

danvilla2 – I have to say genuinely Paul Scholes against us was just unreal. But McGinn’s is better, unfortunately, he won’t get the coverage Scholesy would’ve got. For the circumstance, always remember Cahill’s overhead against Blues.

sirdennis – Sid chipped the goalie at Wolves from about 30 yards once, that was pretty special but I am struggling to think of a better goal than today’s.

Thomas Holte – Shame we haven’t got some of Bruce Rioch’s rockets on video but this diving header by Ted MacDougal was a great goal at Villa Park as was McGinn’s today. Link.

BringbakMON – Link

Erod – I was there when Bobby Charlton dribbled through the whole Villa team. Alan Mcinally was similar. Too many to list but I lean towards Dean Saunders. I was in the Holte End when we suddenly realised the ball was coming our way.

jcm19760 – Apart from the JM goal today For me, it has to be Jack’s goal last season against Cardiff. I was not actually at the game but I did watch live. Link

There are plenty more, Benito Carbone’s effort, Dalian Atkinson against Wimbledon and so on.

It’s an enjoyable Forum Thread for those who enjoy nostalgia and a trip down memory lane.

But what’s yours?
