I’d like to make one thing crystal clear – whoever gets the Villa job will be an immensely privileged individual.

They will become the leader of the lions and be in charge of making them roar again.

Yes, they whimpered last season. The team had a league placing of 16th in one of the worst campaigns ‘in a generation’ as Paul Faulkner remarked to Radio 5 Live a few days ago.

Outsiders may think the claret and blue challenge is not one to be savoured. But it is. It so is.

Forget the tough season and delve deeper into the fabric of the club the new boss will take charge of.

Let’s look back.

This is a club who are one of only four in this country to have won either the Champions League or the European Cup and boast seven FA Cups, seven League Championships and five League Cups.

This is a club who have provided more internationals for England than any other.

This is a club whose biggest fan Ian Taylor played and scored for his team in a major final.

This is a club whose director William McGregor founded the Football League.

This is a club who even made playing in the old Third Division a glittering and glorious experience.

This is a club who defied Hitler by refusing the Nazi Salute in 1938 during a tour of Germany.

This is a club whose famous winger Charlie Athersmith played in the rain with an umbrella.

This is a club who refused to be a United, a City, a Town, a Wanderer or a Rover and elected to go it alone as a Villa.

This is a club who handed charity Acorns a multi-million pound shirt sponsorship for FREE.

Facts to make any Villa fan smile and any neutral sit up and take notice.

Let’s focus on the present.

This is a club with a sparkling academy, whose focus on developing young players and bringing them into the first team has been highlighted many times over the years.

There’s been Gabby Agbonlahor, Gareth Barry, Darius Vassell, Gary Cahill and Gary Gardner to name but five.

This is a club with a home stadium which sends chills down the spine.

This is a club with a supporter base as passionate as they come.

This is a club whose squad boasts goal machine Darren Bent, shot-stopping ace Shay Given and defensive collosus Richard Dunne.

And this is a club with a chairman who ‘lives and breathes’ the claret and blue. He’s totally engrossed in the Villa way and spends an awful lot of time at Bodymoor Heath with the people that matter.

When he appoints his new manager, there’s no question he will give him his utmost support, keeping in constant contact to cajole, congratulate and commiserate – and also give him the tools to make Villa shine again.

A lot has been made of the fact that he hasn’t been to as many games as previous years but the media team always find a way of beaming every second of every match to his base in Cleveland, which boasts Villa memorabilia in abundance.

Now let’s end with the future.

This is a club whose decision-makers want to see success over a prolonged period with a new manager to bring ‘vibrancy’ to Villa and ‘reinvigorate’ the club.

Mr Lerner will be leading the recruitment of the new manager alongside his CEO and he’ll be making it his absolute mission to get the right man for the job.

But he’ll be doing it in a considered manner, not bowing to press interest.

His words in the statement just released make interesting reading: ”We need to be clear and candid with ourselves and with supporters about what we have lacked in recent years.

‘Compelling play and results that instil a sense of confidence that Villa is on the right track have been plainly absent.

‘The most immediate action that we can take is to look carefully at our options in terms of bringing in a new manager who sees the club’s potential and embraces our collective expectations.’

As fan sites Vital Villa, Villa Talk and Heroes and Villains have pointed out, strong stuff and unequivocal proof of his desire to get things right at the club he loves, first and owns, second.
