Speaking to a reporter from IC Brum, Young has said that he will forver be grateful to Steve McClaren for giving him the chance to join the squad and take part in the friendly against Austria and but now he hopes he is able to impress Capello and become a regular.

‘I’ll always be grateful to Steve McClaren for selecting me. I’d played for the Under-21s and he saw enough to put me in the senior squad.

‘Then he gave me my first cap. I think everybody expects England to qualify for major tournaments. I suppose that’s why Steve went. But that’s the thing in football – things move on and as a player you just have to deal with that.

‘I wasn’t on the pitch for the Croatia game, but that doesn’t mean the defeat didn’t hurt.

‘We felt we were good enough to qualify for the European Championships. Now I have to impress a new man – Capello, but so does everybody else.

‘Hopefully I’m young enough to get more opportunities, but for some of the players I suppose time is running out and that’s what makes it so frustrating.

‘I have to concentrate on my Villa form. That’s what got me into the England squad in the first place and I’ll never take that for granted.’
