Woeful Villa Fail To Show Up At Struggling Spurs – Match Stats
It was finally Sunday and Aston Villa fans had the chance to see if we would back up our tremendous victory over Manchester United, by taking all three points off a struggling, but dangerous, Tottenham Hotspur.
It was the expected line up from head coach Dean Smith in our new 352 and it was a bright opening ten from Villa as we took the game to them, pressed high and looked impressive. Then it quickly turned, a few fluffed chances where we needed Emi Martinez to be awake and then they cut us open and took the lead 27 minutes in.
Spurs were hardly great, but we were making them look good by not getting a grip in midfield and a few opportunities aside, we didn’t really look like scoring and getting back into it in the first half and we didn’t.
We came out brightly following what had to be a half time rocket from Smith and we should’ve been level within minutes by either Danny Ings or Matt Targett’s efforts. Then we switched off again, Spurs got right back into the game and we relied on Emi 1 to keep it 1-0 and they had some good chances.
We did have a purple patch around the hour mark but it just wasn’t falling for us until we battled our way into the box, Targett crossed and Ollie mopped it up. 1-1 game on.
Or not, a few minutes later Spurs scored an almost identical goal to make it 2-1.
Danny Ings really should’ve made it 2-2 shortly after, but it just wasn’t falling for us, we didn’t deserve a thing and it was a total car crash of a performance devoid of few, if any, positives other than Martinez saving us from a thrashing.
Way to ruin a weekend.
