Aston Villa may be preparing for life back in the top flight with us set to open up our 2019/20 Premier League campaign against Tottenham Hotspur at their new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this coming weekend, but with plenty to celebrate over the summer following our successful Championship Play-Off campaign and victory at Wembley – there is always one question that is guaranteed to split the fanbase.

The question can come in two forms – Who Is Your All Time Favourite Villan or simply, Best Villa Player Ever.

Doesn’t matter how it’s phrased, you always end up seeing the same sorts of names listed and it’s definitely a generational thing, as some fans have just been lucky enough to see different players grace our shirt and the Villa Park pitch over the years.

It’s always a good question for our summer interviews on the Vital Villa Forum and given our summer reshaping under head coach Dean Smith, it’ll be interesting to see if a few current players work their way into the debate this time next summer.

Wow thats a tough one. McGrath cos he’s the best? Tayls coz he was one of our own? Barry coz of his consistency and longevity? Dion coz he had a 12 inch………..err….. I’m gonna plump for Steve Staunton as I used to model myself on him as a kid. A left foot that could open a tin of tuna from 12 yards.

Brian Little, no question. The most naturally gifted Villa player it has been my pleasure to watch. He used to glide across the grass similar to how Jack does now. Skilful with it as well.

Hitzlesperger from when I was a kid, I think I just liked the name. I think Grealish is seriously up there though.

Dean Saunders was my first Villa hero, had his name on the back of my shirts. I was devastated when he was sold. I’ll go with him for that reason, but obviously the likes of God, Merson, Barry, Mellberg, Laursen etc get honorable mentions.
Stephen Jay Hawkings

Sid, a true legend who’s service to the club was outstanding and arguably bigger than anyone else’s.
Mark A South

Tough one but probably Olof Mellberg!
Bristol Villan

Impossible to narrow it down to just one. Dennis Mortimer, Alan McInally, Garry Thompson, Paul McGrath, Mark Bosnich, Steve Staunton, Gareth Barry, Olof Mellberg, Ian Taylor, Dion Dublin, Juan Pablo Angel all spring immediately to mind. But I’ll go for Nigel Spink.

An impossible question to answer, there are so many.

Now we are back let’s stay there and build a team to be reckoned with.

Brian Little.

Paul McGrath. Love the man, worshipped the player. Ian Taylor, Brian Little, Tony Morley and Gary Shaw would round out my top five.
