Tony Xia’s latest statement does show a man who is gradually getting a grasp of the task ahead of him at Villa Park, even if his other business ventures do seem to be somewhat getting in the way of him being involved day to day.

Football, and especially Championship football, is a very difficult place to learn on the job. There are numerous complications in trying to guide a team out of a league which is probably the most competitive in the world.

Xia’s wording shows a man understanding the true slog that is a 46 match league season. Phrases like “rough ride,” “tough challenges,” and words like “battlefield,” “fight” and “obstacles” show he has a greater appreciation of what it takes to get out of this league.

Playing every few days, and expecting consistent results throughout a ten-month campaign is not something that can be solved simply by throwing money at the situation, and things have gradually taken shape under Steve Bruce despite the ups and downs of this campaign.

Unless both Fulham and Cardiff completely capitulate, it looks likely we’ll be in for a rollercoaster ride in the playoffs; something that the owner seems already prepared for going by his intention to clear his schedule.

We all hope that if we do indeed finish third or fourth that we reach Wembley and get back where we belong. As fans and Xia himself has found out though, things are never quite that straightforward.

The Championship can be an exhausting battle at times, and I am certainly not contemplating another season in this league at the moment, but the next month will be the toughest month of all as we fight for promotion.

As the chairman says, it’s a good thing that we have an experienced coaching staff in place. They have seen it all before, and haveĀ been successful at making it out of this league, and so I’m hoping that experience will get us over the line.
