John Carew has thanked the Villa fans for the reception he has received since joining us as part of a swap deal with Milan Baros moving to Lyon and also asks us to give Ashley Young time to settle.
‘The fans have been fantastic and I really enjoy playing in front of them. They give me such great backing that I want to give something back by playing well and scoring goals. That’s what I’m here for. But I don’t think about being a hero. I just want to go on the pitch and play my best. Once the game starts, we are 11 players who have to work together and take care of each other.’
Adding: ‘I’ve settled in well, and I’m really enjoying myself here. I want to do well and I’m looking forward to the matches which are coming up….It would be nice if we could get into the top five or six over the next couple of years and play in the UEFA Cup.’
He also says of fellow new boy Ashley Young, the ‘doubters’ must give the England U-21 former Watford player time.
He said: ‘Ashley will become an important player for the club. He has plenty of football in his head and he will be a great player for sure, but he is a player who needs time.’
Martin O’Neill has also called for patience saying he will become ‘a big player in time’ adding the transfer fee is a ‘burden and it is too much to ask him to ‘come straight in and be the complete player. Historically Villa are a bigger club than Watford. To come here, and have all that expectation thrown on him, is a lot for him at the moment. But he will rise to the challenge. I have no doubt about that.’
