With Aston Villa celebrating a return to the Premier League for the campaign of 2019/20 following our victory over Derby County in the Championship Play-Off Final, most thoughts are now on the makeup of the squad for our return to the top flight and plenty of players had already sent their goodbye messages before their departures became official on June 1.

The Official Site confirmed on Saturday afternoon that eight players had now officially been released upon the expiry of their existing contracts.

Leaving Bodymoor Heath for the final time are Mile Jedinak, Alan Hutton, Tommy Elphick, Albert Adomah, Glenn Whelan, Ritchie De Laet, Mark Bunn and Micah Richards.

There are no great surprises in that list but a lot of fans were wondering if a couple may be given 12 month deals to see us through, but there’s no room for sentiment sadly – but that doesn’t mean there’s no sadness at the departures of some.

This is the first summer in a while when there’s some regret at those released rather than an overriding sense of ‘finally we’ve got rid of them’.

A suitable send off from the club with that video, and now we play the ‘who’s been transfer listed game’.
