Life-limited children are not expected to reach adulthood. They require specialist care 24-hours-a-day, 7 days a week.
Acorns is the only organisation that provides this to local life-limited children while also offering a range of support services for the whole family to help them cope at every stage of their child’s life and beyond into bereavement.
They currently care for over 600 life-limited children and their families. However, there are a further 1,000 children living with life-limiting conditions within the West Midlands who could be benefiting from Acorns’ services.
Acorns urgently need to reach these children and their families, and offer the expert care and support that helps them live every day to the full before it is too late for them.
It costs us £6.3 million per year to provide existing service.
Costs will rise to almost £9 million over the next three years as Acorns embark on the crucial task of extending care services to reach all the life-limited children and their families living in the region.
There are three specialist children’s hospices serving the West Midlands region.
The hospices are beautiful home-from-home environments where the children can stay for short breaks and receive essential nursing care in comfortable surroundings. Families can also stay at each hospice as they have specially designed family flats.
The hospices are: Acorns in Birmingham (located in Selly Oak), Acorns in the Black Country (located in Walsall) and Acorns in the Three Counties (located in Worcester).
Emergency and end-of-life care is also offered in special family suites that give families their privacy at the most difficult times.
A designated Community Team gives 24-hour practical and emotional support in the home to the whole family at every stage of the child’s life.
Help is also available for parents, siblings and grandparents, and Acorns provide bereavement support for however long it’s needed.
