Marc Albrighton was delighted to have seen his return to the starting line up against Cardiff City earlier in the week, and after impressing again he’s now targeting a sustained run until the end of the season.
Presumably where our strikers will move a bit more and get on the end of some of his crosses!
With various injuries hampering his progress this season and last, Albie has looked pretty bright whenever called upon from the substitutes bench and got four games under his belt to help his match sharpness during a loan spell with Wigan back in the month of November.
Now he’s back though, feeling fit and confident, he told the Official Site that what matters to him now is getting a proper starting run in the first team and hopefully earning himself a new contract in the process as he is free to depart B6 in the summer when his current deal expires.
‘It’s a massive boost to be back in the starting line up. I’ve had a tough time over the past couple of years with injuries and I don’t want to keep dwelling on them, I want to put all that behind me.’
Albrighton goes on to say that he thought he came back from his loan spell with Wigan in reasonably good form and did well when manager Paul Lambert selected him from the bench before Christmas, and he’s obviously carried that on when called on in 2014, but he knows the task ahead of him is to cement his place in the starting line up.
As for the Cardiff game itself, Albrighton focuses on our lack of a finishing touch in the second half.
‘We’re proud of our second half performance. Everything was brilliant in our play. It was just the finishing touch that we didn’t quite have and when we did have it the keeper was in fine form. It was a tough one to take but at least we didn’t lose the game. We’ve got to look on the positive side and we came out of it with a point.’

When there are positives to take you have to take them, and we haven’t had many this season to put in our locker and enjoy, but Albrighton’s cameos in the main have been one of the few we could, so he’s entitled to take any positive he wants from the second half performance, and being brutally honest, we all are, because we just hope the second half performance actually turns into one for 90 minutes.
However a clean sheet given how ropey we were in the first half isn’t to be sniffed at really either, but the nervousness comes from whether a point against Cardiff will prove to be enough as we head closer to May.
With the chances we had, we should’ve nicked it even if it was a balanced game over the 90 minutes, but we can’t afford to, and we aren’t in the position to be fair when it’s a game of two halves now.
A run towards the end of the season now, similar to the one we had last season, will certainly lift people ahead of next season and ultimately that is all we can hope for.
March will be tricky, Norwich will be up for it, Man City, something about a ‘little horse’ and then Stoke and Man Utd…..hmmmm.
April looks a lot more attractive.
You get the feeling our chances improve if Albie continues to be involved, as against Cardiff he again created more chances than anybody else on the pitch – and that was without players trying to get on the end of the others that could’ve seen him double that tally!
