Goalkeeper Brad Guzan has said he would love to emulate Villa legend Nigel Spink at the club, but he realises he has a long way to go yet.
Spinky made more appearances for Villa in his time with us than any other goalkeeper in our history, and during his 400 plus games for us, there were certainly some memorable matches that would figure on his highlight reel.
Speaking to the Official Site as we all struggle for news whilst the players are out in Portugal and we twiddle our thumbs with no scheduled game this weekend, Guzan explained.
‘It was fantastic to meet Spinky. It was an honour to get to meet him because he’d held in such high esteem at this football club. He was very complimentary about me when we chatted and that was really nice to here from someone like him, who’s seen it and done it.’
Guzan went on to admit that obviously he has a hell of a long way to go yet in order to match Spink’s achievements in our colours, but he really does hope that one day he proves himself as good and as consistent as Nige, and when he leaves Villa ultimately, he can return with as much respect as our 1982 hero does.
Just over 350 games to go for the appearance total for Guzan, as he’s clocked up 95 appearances all in for us so far since joining back in August 2008.
