Aston Villa striker Chris Sutton has decided to retire from football due to an eye injury that he has been unable to recover from.

Sutton, who joined Villa last season as a free agent and scored the winner against Everton, picked up an eye problem related to a concussion that he received in the match against Manchester United in December.

Following a lengthy decision process, the former Birmingham City, Celtic and Chelsea striker has now decided to end a career that started with Norwich City in 1991.

Sutton’s agent Tony Gill said: ‘I spoke to Chris on Wednesday and, given the eye problem, he has decided to retire.’

‘If Chris had declared that his eye was OK he would probably have got another year at Villa…’

‘…but he decided that he could not do himself justice with the eye injury – and more importantly he has taken into account the effects it might have on his future life.’

Vital Villa would like to thank Chris Sutton for his time at Villa, and wishes him all the best in the future!

  • I will remember fondley Everton away last year when we snatched victory from them late on………..

I ended up crashing at a mates flat in Liverpool, going on a right bender, and getting laid – scouse girls are *****s by the way.

I owe all of that (one off best night out ever) to Chris Sutton.

Cheers Chris, you gave your all whenever you were on the pitch, and helped me get my end away with some 21 year old student with a body to die for.

    LEGEND.

  • I wish Chris good luck for the future his stay at Villa Park was brief but he did us proud. Thanks also to Davis, off to Fulham. Shame he has to go, would have liked to see him develop into a Villa legend.

  • In view of the circumstances he’s quite obviously taken the only route that was really open to him. Good luck to him in the future, with whatever direction life should take him. We only saw a very small glimpse of what Chris Sutton was really all about, but we saw enough to all wish that we’d have signed this guy when he was in his mid-twenties.

  • I think this will be a blow for MON. He may have seen him as the big target man as cover for Carew for the odd game.

  • We that’s another player that MON has lined up to join us??…, replacing CS? Best of luck with your life after playing football Chris – and best wishes regarding your health. You’ll be welcome down the Villa… but stay away from The Sty! 😉 Best wishes…
