Barry Disappointed and Sickened.

Gareth Barry has said he will talk to the rest of the team before deciding whether to carry on taking penalties. Barry missed a penalty that would have cemented three points for Aston Villa v Newcastle at the weekend. The player scored two penalties in the same fixture last year.

Barry replaced Angel as the regular penalty taker, not that we get given that many you understand! Scoring the two v Newcastle as well as one against Spurs and one v Wycombe in the cup.

Barry said: ‘I’ll be brave enough to take the next one, I’ve got no worries, but I’ll have a chat with my teammates before making that decision. I feel I’ve had a good record from the spot over the years but maybe this is also an opportunity to give somebody else a go – that might be the right thing to do. I just feel down at the minute because it would have topped a great day for the team. I’ve got that responsibility on my shoulders but I won’t be thinking about it when we play Bolton.’

Barry put in a man of the match performance v the Magpies and in my opinion has held this team together at times this season. He was criticised by some fans for coming off the pitch laughing, but as one pundit said, players will come up and take the michael out of you when you do something like that. I guess us fans expect players to bleed for their team, but surely the most gutted person was Barry himself?

He added: ‘I was confident enough to take the penalty. I wasn’t thinking about missing it although I didn’t realise how late in the game it was. If I’d have put it away that would have been game over. I’m very disappointed. It’s a sickener. I’ve apologised to the lads.’
