Birmingham Mail reporter Gregg Evans is reporting that Steve Bruce is waiting on the go-ahead from the club to make a number of additions in the backline.

No transfer shortlist has been drawn up as of yet, but the club’s backroom staff and scouts have been looking at potential targets just in case they are given the nod to sign players.

Robert Huth, Moses Odubajo and Michael Hefele are all said to be in the club’s sights but any decision on new signings will be made at the “start of next week.”

Conversations with free agents are believed to have already taken place, but the club’s financial position means no official proposals have been made yet.

Huth, in particular, is said to be prepared to take a significant wage cut to make the move to Villa Park, but whether we will make an offer for the German, we will have to wait and see.

It’s good to see that the Bruce and his staff are making plans for the new season, but it seems that the club are not going to make moves for any player until it becomes clearer what financial constraints will be in place.

  • Huth and Hefele look logical choices, but do we need to saturate the right back birth again? With Bree, Elmohamady, De Laet, Richards and Hutton, it looks OTT yet again. I know Hutton can play on the left, but genuine left footers are preferable.

Maybe we will off load De Laet and Elmo, but Bruce’s plan looks lopsided again.

Will any faith be shown in Suliman, Clark and Bedeau?

    • If we don’t start seeing something of them, we’ll blow their potential but not letting get the opportunity to step up and make errors.

  • Hefele will cost Although good signing surely Sam greater priority with cash tight! Fulham had 6 loan players Wilson & Mason could cover Snoddy No fee Huth covers Terry and Hernandez better than Grabban! Jack and Chester must stay if at all possible Simple really!!

    • The free moves are generally extra wages though and signing on fee which is the problem. Until things change Bruce needs to be clever rather than typical.

  • Be careful what you wish for. We lucky Bruce still in pic. People seem to forget a little macro fact. We on verge of bankruptcy. What manager do people think will come to villa based on it being a big club, high expectations and no money. We will be in championship a while. Get used to it.

  • All very depressing but you are right Ali, at the moment that is the reality, get rid of Bruce and we might not have a long queue of managers wanting to perform miracles with no money available.

  • Yes fear, very depressing. He is asset stripping the club of players, trying to bring it to a bare minimum sustainable level. Very hard thing for big clubs in championship. As there costs are so much higher compared to other clubs. Very scary times. But this is the future. Clubs going all out for big bucks of premier league and going bankrupt. I make a guess 5 clubs will go into admin by 2030. I think we will pull through though.
