After his shocking England debut, Scott Carson is determined to show that he can be England’s number 1 for the foreseeable future.

speaking on the official site, our onloan number 1 said:

‘A lesser person may have crumbled after the experience against Croatia but I won’t.

‘Hopefully I can look back at the game in the coming years and see it as a turning point in my career.

‘I was disappointed at the time but it was just one of those things. That’s the annoying thing about being a goalkeeper – people remember your mistakes.’

Yes he does have a point, people remember goalkeeping errors far more than any other players and against Croatia most will remember his errors, but only vaguely remember he pathetic performance from the rest of the team. Dare I say, in history, most people won’t even remember enough about the game to question why in such an important match, the Ginger One decided to make such changes but there you go.

‘People say you’ve got to be mad to be a keeper – and sometimes I agree with them.’

Throughout the period, Carson is also adamant that the support of O’Neill and the support of the Villa faithful has helped him become stronger and not dwell on the mistakes.

‘The Croatia disappointment has really helped me as a person. I’m not one to dwell on mistakes. You have to take the next game as it comes – I put it to the back of my mind straight away and since then, I think I’ve done well for Villa.

‘The fans and players helped me through the incident. The game after Croatia was Middlesbrough away and the Villa fans were tremendous.

‘They were unbelievable and gave me support from first whistle to last. I made a few good saves in that match and that helped my confidence.

‘The lads have been superb too. They gave me a bit of banter which has been good. I don’t mind taking some of that. It helped me along. It just shows the character in the dressing room.’

Carson is now ready to impress the new man in the England hotseat:

‘Fabio Capello has a great track record and he’s meant to be a top manager.

‘It should be an exciting time for the country and hopefully it should be good times ahead.

‘I’ll certainly be looking to make a good impression. There are a lot of English lads at Villa and hopefully the England boss will be at plenty of Villa games this season.

‘I have a lot to prove. I am only a youngster and I have a lot to learn. It’s going to be a challenge and one that I’m ready for.’
