The EFL have now confirmed September’s Goal of the Month for the Championship and Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn’s fabulous effort against Sheffield Wednesday secured a whopping 54% of the public vote.

The game ended in a disappointing 2-1 defeat obviously, but McGinn’s sublime volley was certainly a reason for cheer and many Aston Villa fans thought his effort would be an absolute shoe-in for Goal of the Month, and they were right.

In fairness, there were some cracking goals and McGinn’s effort won out against Preston North End’s Alan Browne (Bolton) and Sheffield Wednesday’s Adam Reach (Leeds United).

Having been informed of his win, McGinn joked to Sky Sports that it was one of those that ‘as soon as you hit it you just know it is going in’ and although he was ‘delighted’ to pick up the award, ‘the next time it happens it might go in Row Z like my shot at the weekend’.

Having already more than won the fans over following his arrival from Hibernian during the last transfer window, I’m sure his words in the full interview are only going to endear him to the fanbase even more.

It’s also a great opportunity to watch it again, of course!
