Controversial Or Sensible? One More Signing?

Let the controversy begin!

Alex McLeish has told the press he only expects one more signing this summer, that of a winger. Obviously he doesn`t name names but the reports are saying we are still negotiating with Wigan for Charles N`Zogbia.

Mat Kendrick has some quotes from McLeish in The Sunday Mercury

“At this moment we`re only looking at one more. We`re going to utilise the squad. We bought two players in in January as well. We have a wage bill to contend with so I can`t buy willy nilly. I can`t just discard these players, say ‘You`re not going to be in our plans and Mr Lerner can you give me another £10 million and wages for another player?`.

Adding, “But Randy`s got a plan and fans should trust him.”

And on the transfer target, “We`re trying to bring another player in, of quality, who we believe can play in a Villa shirt and we`ll keep trying for that until I`ve got some news for you.”

McLeish explains on www.skysports.com that they are looking to replace lost players with players already at the Club.

Now ok, I thought we`d be spending all the Ashley Young and Stewart Downing money but it does surely (?) make sense to use what we have first and also, we all keep saying we want the youth given a chance. Now they will be.

McLeish says: ‘For the time being, it will just be one and we’ll be doing further assessment of the squad over the next few weeks. I’ve seen terrific application on the training ground and really good quality from guys like Stephen Warnock and Stephen Ireland, for instance, who never really made as much of a contribution as you would expect.”

So, Ireland and Warnock, two new entries to the team (not using the cliche that they are like new signings!) … Then Fabian Delph he cost a fortune and has hardly been used. So… a 3rd ‘new` entry to the team?

The Villa boss adds, ‘We’ve got to pay respect to the players that are already at the club. At the same time, we’ve also got a wage bill to manage as well. We can’t just discard players that are on big wages and say ‘right, we’ve had enough of you, I’m going to try someone else, but in the meantime you can have your wage every week’. We’ve got to see if we can get the best out of these guys.”

He also says the young players who he has been working with in the last few weeks have impressed him, ‘Some of them, like Marc Albrighton, Ciaran Clark and Barry Bannan, made the breakthrough last season. We have a great academy, and it’s a credit to the academy that those players are now on the verge of the first team.’

BEEFY in the forum has started a thread on this and is being positive, saying if you read what McLeish is saying closely, it makes good sense. BEEFY isn`t one of the lickspittle or ‘tame` posters, he says what he thinks in no uncertain terms, so he`s not being ultra positive just for the sake of it! See: A little bit of clarity re: no more signings

And as we cater for all comers on Vital Villa, the more doom laded thread (please note strong language from the start) One more signing before the season starts
