Martin O’Neill declared after the 0-0 draw with Portsmouth ‘it was another frustrating 90 minutes’.

In a game where Pompey hardly showed up and didn’t manage one true shot on target, it was former Villa keeper David James who kept his team in the match pulling off a few superb saves inlcuding a great reflex save from a John Carew shot and a great block for a powerful shot from Gabriel Agbonlahor, not to mention a first half close range shot from Craig Gardner.

O’Neill said:

‘David James was all that stood between us and three points. It was another frustrating 90 minutes here at Villa Park for us. Very frustrating. We did enough to win the game and created a number of chances. David James was terrific for them and was probably the difference between us getting one point and three.’

‘I don’t remember them actually bothering us. All the chances fell to us, we tried to win the game and I thought we were unlucky. Portsmouth came for a point today and that’s their prerogative. Our job is to try and break them down and over the 90 minutes we were unable to do so. But that was more to do with James being in spectacular form for them than any glaring misses from us.’

‘For most of the game, other than a ten minute spell, we were camped in their half. The goal just wouldn’t come, but it wasn’t for the want of trying.’

You’d never have guessed Portsmouth were fighting for a European place with such a tame performance, that is for sure, glad they didn’t turn up and even more glad the bell ringer forgot his bell today, wonder if he left it under his hat?

  • Mathematically safe. I have a theory that if we had finished the season strongly MON might have thought, ‘I don’t need to buy in that position’. At least you can still see the gaps. Looking forward to the close season and next year.

  • like everton aint boring, get a grip! one man up front nearly all sesaon hardly makes them entertaining does it?! honestly cant remember last time i seen everton involved in even a half decent match let alone a good one.

  • 10 men behind ball like portsmouth played today thats what everton do with johnson chasing lost causes and long balls mainly thats the way everton play, dont deny it. no-one can deny villa have at least been trying to play some football without great success so far, watch us next year evertonmike with 4 to 5 quality additions in summer backed by lerner, who everton buying then and where they gettin dosh from???

  • Great point for Pompey. Apologies for the dire perfermance but needs must. We’ll have 14 men behind the ball we go to Everton.

  • Whats all the hype about David James? There wasn’t a single shot yesterday that you wouldn’t expect a premiership keeper to save. We were poor and Everton Mike is right, it WAS boring. Carew allowed himself to be caught offside again and again, he has to do better than that!

  • MOYES IS GOD: Leave that kind of sad language off the site. We all have a swear but please don’t use THAT one. On another note; is Beattie going to be sold? I would have liked him at Villa Park but can really see him off to Bolton as per all the other expensive buys that lose their confidence after a big pricetag / payday. Shame really, thought he was another Shearer.

  • Please do not respond or retaliate on the Everton site to MOYES comments. They are getting dealt with, we would hate to lower Villa to that level.

  • Moyes, for some reason the swear filter didn’t work today but there is no excuse for that language on a public site and no need to abuse other members. As a director of Vital Football, I would hate to ban you but will be forced to if that sort of behaviour continues.

  • Someone woke up on the right side of the bed Fear, if it was me I’d have banned the **** straight away! lol 😉

  • Its like all Everton fans are like that. The Evertonian nutter I know uses the F word in nearly ever 3rd word he speaks
