After the huge disappointment of the Newcastle United performance and result, few Aston Villa fans were looking forward to Sunday’s Premier League clash with Manchester United.
United are certainly not the side they used to be, but we all know our incredibly poor record against them over the last decade and more, and even then when we have played better, the inevitable ‘referee favour’ has always gone their way, and now we simply have the video assistant referee technology doing it for them.
That, however, did not happen at Villa Park for a change. We got off to a flying start under new gaffer Unai Emery and seven minutes in Jacob Ramsey had justified his recall as he set Leon Bailey on his way to fire into the net to give us the advantage.
Minutes it got even better as Villa remembered we could actually play football and do more than score from corners as Lucas Digne stepped up in minute eleven to fire home his free kick.
United were shell shocked, but even a late lucky 45 minute own goal as the ball deflected off Ramsey and totally wrong footed a rarely tested Emi Martinez wasn’t enough to start them to life.
It was only half time and Emery had managed to do what few Villa managers ever had – he sent them back out after the break with exactly the same mindset, and four minutes after the whistle went, Ramsey had got himself on the scoresheet to make it three and restore our two goal advantage.
There was no way back for Erik ten Hag’s side and we were rarely troubled in reality. The perfect start and I can safely say I enjoyed my Sunday evening for a change.
Now to build on it.
