What a funny world football is.

It wasn’t long back – apart from a very few – that Emile Heskey was met with groans when his name was on the Villa’s team sheets but since Gerard Houllier arrived and he brought Heskey on as a super sub, he’s looked like a different player.

Now fair enough, a few good performances do not a great player make, but come on, admit it, did you ever think you would be saying ‘we weren’t the same after Heskey came off’ as ‘most’ (?) of us did during the Spurs game?

He set up the goal and was putting in another good shift v Spurs before the old Heskey problem, injury, meant he had to come off.

Certainly strange to see what a difference certain managers make with certain players, must be down to their approach or just their ability to fill a player who is struggling with confidence.

Confidence and aggression seem to be the two things that Emile so often has missed from what I can see, certainly during his time at Villa. He’s one of those that I … and many others … SO wanted to see do well because he did come as an underdog. To be fair he had resurrected his career at Wigan and a fair few of their fans were upset to see him go but we’ve seen very little in his time here to make any of us worry about a Heskey exit until the last few games, now he looks the business.

Apparently Heskey came off with a dead leg, so hopefully it won’t take long to recover from and the international break could be in his favour.

As I say, what a funny world football is.

That leads us nicely on to the Sunday papers.

The Express have a report by John Richardson saying that England manager (yup, unbelievable I know!) Fabio Capello wants Heskey to make a one night only return to the International set up to face Montenegro.

Meanwhile Rob Draper at The Daily Mail says Capello tried and failed in his attempt as the 32-year-old Heskey said no.

Good on you Emile, stay out of the England shambles and concentrate on scoring for us!
