Russell Martin has backed his former boss to be a success at Villa Park after praising what he achieved at Norwich.

Speaking to Talksport following the official appointment of Paul Lambert to the Villa hotseat, the Norwich defender said of his former boss:

‘I don’t think you can emphasise enough how good he has been for the club and the players as individuals. He’s a great manager and I’m sure he’ll do well wherever he goes. He’s a very intelligent man manager, he leaves the coaching to his assistant and coaches most of the time, and just keeps an eye on things.’

Whilst that on the face of things sounds like he focuses on tactics and buries his head in a notebook during the week, Martin says he’s far more hands on with the players than you’d expect:

‘Where his strength lies is keeping everybody happy. There are players in the team that haven’t played many games but they’re still happy which is hard to come by when players are out of the team. He’s got a great way of dealing with the lads. Putting an arm round them when they’re low as well as being serious and having a joke.’

Sounds like Lambert has the right mix when it comes to the man management and personal dealings. Leave the coaches to train the tactics his comes up with, he’s not out their barking orders or telling them to run faster, but he’s out their having quiet words, giving hints, and keeping morale high.

Again there will be little he can change overnight, but slow and steady growth when we can see a project unfolding should be more than enough for all of us to get behind.
