Manager Steve Bruce has admitted it was a hugely frustrating day against Ipswich Town at Portman Road last weekend.

Playing out a 1-1 draw with Jonathan Kodjia getting back on the scoresheet as summer signing John McGinn grabbed the assist, it was a disappointing day as with the hosts down to ten men we just didn’t do enough to take all three points.

The game did carry more disappointments than positives as another individual error from Orjan Nyland cost us the goal and we then seemed to stall.

Bruce was even left slightly joking that although he saw the sending off was the right call, he wished the referee had left him on as until that point we were actually playing better on the day.

Suffice to say Kodjia and McGinn come in for plenty of praise and on the Kodjia front, he needed the goal so hopefully that will more propel him back to the form we know he’s capable of as his confidence grows now.

Onto Brentford in midweek now and we know categorically we have to be better than that if we want a result from it.

  • Sorry Mr Bruce you may be frustrated but we have to watch that. If plan A doesn’t work there never appears to be a plan B. Two wide players and only one in the middle ?? The punt forward ?? The passing back and forth and backwards … why can’t we be more direct sometimes ?? I can see us just repeating last seasons misgivings … success in the majority but a few spells when we go off the boil and that will in the end be our downfall under Bruce …. again .

  • The football is consistently turgid and slow despite having a talented first XI. This has to be down to poor coaching.

Equally, our squad is very imbalanced. We only have two wingers (Green & Albert) which is crazy for a team that plays 4-3-3/4-2-3-1/4-1-4-1 – if either get injured (Green last year) or drops out of form (Albert back end of last season and current) we have no option other than moving a full back (Elmo or de Laet) forward. We only have one left back and 5 right backs. We have 6 sitting central midfielders (Jedi, Whelan, Hourihane, Bjarnason, Lyden, Doyle Hayes), only McGinn who can go box to box (excepting Lansbury who never sees game time??) and one 10 in Jack? Why did Steer go out on loan when Nyland looks no better??

Bruce has also now decided that Jedinak is a CB and Elmo is a RW????

  • Agree with you Barry. Would add that, in my opinion, the way SB sets up the team is not adapted to the players we have.
We need at least another CB and definitely a quality LB.
Midfield should play 4 with Bjarnason, Hourihane, McGinn & Grealish at the front of a diamond 4. That midfield would control midfield against most of the Championship teams and, with support from 2 good full backs, would get plenty of supply into a front TWO. Green is a striker, chose from him and Kodjia, Adomah, Davis, Hogan, RHM and that is a set up that would be good to watch and win games. Concentrate your loan efforts on a CB and LB Mr Bruce.
