Paul Lambert has said returning Brad Guzan will get the chance to challenge Shay Given, and he hasn’t been brought in to simply make up the numbers.
Guzan is in the process of finalising a new deal that will see his return to Villa Park after leaving the other month as his contract ended, and Lambert has said the 27 year old will be on an equal footing with our Republic of Ireland international as they battle it out for the No1 jersey.
Speaking to the Birmingham Mail Lambert confirmed the deal was nigh on done, and he talked about Brad’s potential involvement on his return.
‘It’s near. I’ve watched Brad and some of his games when he was in the team and he was excellent. I know he’s always had that stigma of being the No2 but when you come back at the start of the season nobody knows what’s going to happen and it depends on whoever does well. Brad played very well and maybe he found himself a bit unlucky to be back out.’
It’s certainly a chord that will strike with fans, as a large number thought his performances did not warrant Shay Given automatically coming back into the side when fit. You would also assume that Brad wouldn’t entertain returning unless he believed Lambert would give him a fair crack of the whip this time round.
