After news was confirmed that Brett Holman had his contract terminated by mutual consent, he not only confirmed his arrival at Al Nasr, he also said that without regret it just wasn’t meant to be at B6.
In quotes carried by thenational.ae the 29 year old who joined us on a free transfer said.
‘The Premier League is a fantastic competition and I was at a great club, Aston Villa. They treated me really well, but it wasn’t meant to be there.’

The Australian international only spent one season at the club, and although he was industrious and worked hard, but he failed to make the desired impact at the Birmingham club.
Holman arrived in the Premier League last summer, signing for Villa from AZ Alkmaar. Plenty of Villa fans were quick to get the Australian’s name printed on the back of their shirts from The Soccer Store, as the attacking midfielder came with a solid reputation after ten years playing in the Eredivisie.
One thing that the club hoped for was a player who could contribute goals from midfield, which would take some of the goalscoring burden away from the side’s strikers. Although a solid striker of the football, Holman only managed to score one goal for Villa in the Premier League, which came against QPR at Loftus Road. Holman scored a lot of goals for AZ and previously NEC Breda, but failed to recapture this in England.
That said, the Australian’s experience in a young side last season was valuable, and at no point was the player’s work ethic or commitment on the pitch questioned. He showed glimpses of his ability, but to really push on would have needed more time to bed into the way of football in England.
Paul Lambert is obviously looking to make the Villa squad his own, and is really starting to do so with a busy summer in the transfer window already. With Holman signed by his predecessor Alex McLeish, Lambert will have been willing to let the Aussie leave to pursue a lucrative contract with Al Nasr.
Shame, he never quite fit in with Villa, he started brightly enough and then it all seemed to taper off. Good luck Brett!
