Having signed for Aston Villa yesterday from Barnsley, 25 year old midfielder Conor Hourihane can’t wait to get started at the club.

Coming in officially for an undisclosed fee, the Cork born player signed a three and a half year deal as manager Steve Bruce really gets about reshaping the squad for promotion now and in signing his deal he becomes the fifth addition under Bruce.

Having started out at Plymouth Argyle he racked up 142 appearances for them and then found himself at Oakwell where he made another 130 appearances with a return of 31 goals.

Importantly though he comes in having been made Captain at Plymouth, a role he continued at Barnsley.

Speaking to the Official Site he explained.

‘I`m really pleased to be here. Aston Villa are a massive club and I`m looking forward to a new chapter in my career and developing further as a player under Steve Bruce. I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone connected to Barnsley Football Club; from the owner, to the Head Coach, the backroom staff, and of course to the supporters who have been amazing to me throughout my time at Oakwell.’

With double success for Barnsley last year, two trips to Wembley for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and League One Play Off final, it’s been a good year for Hourihane so far in the Championship as he picked up the Player of the Month award for August and found himself in two Republic of Ireland provisional squads for World Cup qualifiers.

With six goals to his name already this season he’s hoping that form continues now he’s here.

‘I am over the moon to be here. Aston Villa is one of the very biggest clubs in England. Then there`s Villa Park. We have Steve Bruce in charge. We have fantastic facilities. We have great players. With the size of the club and where it wants to go, it was a no brainer for me to come here.’

He added.

‘I want to continue the way I have been playing at Barnsley. My confidence is high. Long may that continue. I work hard day in and day out and hopefully my form continues. Villa fans can expect an all-round midfielder. I like to stop attacks and also start attacks. I like to get in the box and score goals. I like to chip in with goals and assists. Hopefully that will continue – there`s no reason why not. I just can`t wait to embrace playing at Aston Villa and hit the ground running.’
