With James Bree now on our books and Ritchie De Laet set for a return to first team action following his knee injury, Alan Hutton has been talking about competition ahead of the coming 2017/18 campaign.

De Laet, a summer capture from Leicester City will return to action in pre season following six months on the sidelines with a knee injury that limited him to only three appearances – the last of which coming in September.

Bree was a January arrival from Barnsley with six starts made with a further appearance from the substitutes bench.

Hutton had a solid year in the backline, winning friends once again in his showings across the year.

Speaking to the Official Site to discuss the coming campaign, he explained.

‘The fact is that competition is vital in football – it spurs you on to keep producing good, solid performances. It keeps you on your toes. James and Ritchie will want the shirt I`m sure and I will have to keep producing performances to keep hold of it.’

Hutton went on to add about both players.

‘James has a bright future in the game, no question, he`s a talented boy while Ritchie won the Premier League title before he arrived here. They will head into pre-season determined and so will I. I am sure we will push each other on to perform week-in and week-out and that can only be good news for the team.’

The Scottish international added that ultimately manager Steve Bruce was a straight shooter and the player in form and playing well would get the nod, so that will spur everybody on.

‘The gaffer here is straightforward – if you`re the man in form and playing well, you`re in the team. That`s all anyone can ask. James, Ritchie and I are all desperate for Villa to succeed this season and we will be doing everything we can to help us challenge at the top of the table.’
