Aston Villa owner Dr Tony Xia has rubbished the speculation linking on loan Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone with a January switch to West Bromwich Albion.

Reports emerged over the festive period that West Brom were interested in the player and reports stated that they would be in discussions with United about recalling him so they could sign him on a permanent basis.

Responding to a fan on twitter, Xia said about the stories.

Sky Sports went on to say that according to Steve Bruce, who held further discussions with Jose Mourinho this week, he was not aware of anything concrete in the press reports and the topic of our near neighbours didn’t come up during those chats.

  • Been a big plus for us this season and really important now we get promoted and keep hold of him.

He’s not going to break into the United first team, so realistically Villa in the Prem is as good as the lad can get.

  • I hope he stays. Also, I don’t get how he can be recalled if he is on a season-long loan – is there a recall clause in there? When he rejoined in the summer, I thought it was a season-long loan with a purchase option at the end of the loan period, as he i

  • A really good young keeper that surely has some international ambitions. We need to match his ambition by returning to the Prem, then we can build and rise together.

  • Hope not, but if he has a recall clause it isn’t down to the policy set out by Xia in a tweet.

The original story came from TeamTalk though, not a reputable source at all. Just shocking some of the mainstream papers have repeated the made up rumour as

  • He should stay btw, first team football guaranteed, no good going elsewhere and reverting to the bench is it? Looking better by the game, he’s going to be a great player.

  • Ay yes Mike, seem to remember they activated the option. I could get it if he went to Palace, but Smethwick?? He’d be an idiot and they’d pass us on the way down.

  • Agree JPA, not even a sideways step in my humble and his lack of experience in relative terms wouldn’t see him bounce Ben Foster. I’m not sure why Palace seem to not rate Wayne Hennessey either. Johnstone seems to fit us in the way Bosnich did and Spink
