Paul Lambert still isn’t paying much attention to results in pre season, this time taking confidence from Christian Benteke’s 45 minute return to the pitch.

Villa went down 2-0 to Luton and whilst they took their few chances well, the result doesn’t reflect the game, the chances we had or our second half performance especially – but that’s football for you when you don’t find the net yourself.

Speaking to the Official Site Lambert explained.

‘It was just anoher fitness thing, Luton did really fine against us. The pleasing thing was Christian being back, some of his touches were brilliant. He had 45 minutes, he’s only done a bit of training. He’s still got work to do on match fitness but that 45 minutes will do him the world of good.’

Lambert admitted that the injury situation at the moment was frustrating, and to be honest fans can see that from the line up as Benteke was the only recognised first team striker. Graham Burke, Jack Grealish and Calum Robinson all got good pitch time otherwise and that’ll do them the world of good and I’d imagine fans saw flashes of why they are so well rated although they still do have a way to go in development terms.

Ahead of the next game against Crewe, Lambert says he’s hopeul of getting one or two players back from the sickbench for that game, which would be nice wouldn’t it.
