Defender Joleon Lescott has been back in the press talking about his recent tweeting exploits.

Speaking to the Times’ Henry Winter, he again repeated that he hadn’t locked his phone whilst driving home and that was the cause of the bum car tweet, and as well as given more details about it – such as it’s not the first time he’s bum dialled (but this time tweeted) he also said he was disappointed that more people hadn’t believed him.

‘I didn`t lock my phone, it must have accidentally gone off, I don`t know how, whether you believe it or not, It`s not the first time I`ve put my phone in my pocket and accidentally dialled someone. I don`t own the car, I wouldn`t tweet that picture. A young player, a friend of mine said: ‘I`m thinking of getting this car, what do you think?.’ That was the only reason it was on my phone, I`d never tweeted after a game, there was no message attached, I don`t know why people don`t believe me.’

Adding.

‘I can take the criticism of on the field. I`m a grown man, I can look in the mirror and know I`ve worked hard in my career. I don`t get carried away by criticism or praise. But the reaction was intense. People had a lot to say. Pundits, critics – these people act like they`ve never made a mistake before. For me to accidentally tweet that picture is not the biggest crime in the world. I`m a Villa fan, and defeats and bad performances are hard to take – it hurts.’

Okay, Lescott is right, it’s hardly the crime of the century but for fans it’s one thing after another, and following on from spitgate and the lack of even a fluffy apology there acknowledging it wouldn’t have looked good, we get nothing and then this.

Sometimes, when the straw that broke the camel’s back has come months ago, the tiniest thing that might make you laugh is built into something it wouldn’t ordinarily be.

It appears that does occur to him though.

‘With results and the performance it wasn’t great timing.’

With Lescott making the headlines for inviting a fan down to Bodymoor Heath in further social media faux par’s, he said his reaction was due to a threat to ‘carve’ another scar in his head from a keyboard warrior.

And to be fair, whilst many still don’t think it was the correct response from him – the assumption was something had got his goat.

In the interview he also said he was open to moving in January if the club had deemed it right, but despite interest from MLS side LA Galaxy, he didn’t force a move as he felt he would be ‘jumping ship’ given our predicament if Remi Garde wanted him to remain.

‘There was some genuine interest from LA Galaxy in January, but for me to jump ship – I don’t want that to be my legacy. I’d prefer us to go down and me be a part of that than, ‘Oh, he left in January, spent six months and felt it was not his responsibility.’ There’s the possibility of staying up. We could go from being one of the worst teams in Aston Villa’s history to one of the greatest if we stay up.’
