Youngster Jordan Lyden has said that Kevin MacDonald continues to be a big influence on him as he begins to slowly make his name in Villa’s first team fold.

With three Villa appearances to his name now, following the 20 year old’s debut against Wycombe Wanderers in the FA Cup, positivity – or the search given the lack of it by the club – is in full flow on the official site at the minute.

With 2015-16 being his breakthrough year, the midfielder said he was very keen to kick on now, as now he’s got a taste he wants more of it.

Talking about his breakthrough, he also said the return of Kevin MacDonald the other year was a huge bonus for the youngsters, and our former Under 21 manager continues to play a big part in helping to motivate and advise the youngsters in his position at the club now.

‘Kevin coming back has been massive. As a young player, you see a pathway to the first team, which is really important. If you know you have a chance, it’s an even bigger incentive. I’ve managed to break into the first team group, which has been great for me – and even over the past few weeks, we’ve seen Keinan Davis on the bench. That will drive the younger boys on to work even harder as they look to make it.’

Lyden went on to say that MacDonald is a ‘vital link’ in the first team picture for the youngsters as they get more involved.

‘Kevin is a vital link in there for us. He’s always been great to work with, too, on the training field. He has always worked us hard. He’s always been on at us, doesn’t give you a moment’s rest and always has had high standards. That’s what you need. Just look at the players he has brought through in the past.’

Obviously Sid Cowans comes in for praise – even if our security staff don’t recognise the legend.

‘And then there’s Sid Cowans. I don’t really need to say much about him – he’s an idol for us all. He’s won the European Cup, the League Championship, played for his country – he’s an icon here. We can all look up to him and he’s easy to talk to. He’s been there and done it.’
