Martin O’Neill has told Luke Moore that he hasn’t been forgotten.

Moore, who is back to scoring ways in the reserves following his return from his shoulder injury and subsequent surgery, is still very much in the managers plans.

O’Neill told the official site: ‘You can’t discount his goalscoring efforts for the reserves and some goals have been very good. So he’s getting there. Now it’s just a case of breaking into the team. I think just the fitness element of Luke’s game is the one thing he could do with expediting. He’s had no problems with the shoulder.’

Adding: ‘Up until he got the shoulder injury at Chelsea he was a permanent fixture in the team, so I saw a lot of him then. You could say he was maybe playing out of position, on the left-hand side, with Juan Pablo Angel through the middle and Gabby on the right. He was doing fine, but he got injured and we have more strength in depth now. So it’s up to him to force his way back in. Had he been fit by say late November, the chances would have been there because we didn’t have the strength in depth.’

‘Now we have more to choose from and Luke is one of those options. It’s up to him to force his way in and take his chance.’

Moore isn’t in tonight’s reserve team squad so could feature for the full team against Arsenal on Wednesday night.

  • Put him in the starting XI and drop Petrov for a game. Lets go back to the successful 4-3-3 which kept us undefeated so long. Sorensen – Bouma Mellberg Cahill Bardsley (or Hughes) – Barry McCann Davis – Moore (Left Wing) Young (Right Wing) – Carew (through middle) SUBS – Taylor, Ridgewell, Hughes (or Bardsley), Petrov and Agbonlahor

  • Deano – I do like it but perhaps Barry or Berger on left (Maloney is out I think) and drop Luke to the bench. I’m all for playing players in recognised positions.

  • Quite like the idea of going back to 4-3-3 as long as it IS attacking and doesn’t become 5 across midfield.

  • Why has MON not tried the 4-3-3 again since Chelsea away ? Baffles me,especially once he`d bought Young.

  • Luke has been in great form for the reseves, now is the time to put him in and let him run at the Arsenal defence, especially with Touro out. Moore, Young and Carew up front could be a scarey combination for a lot of defences.

  • It’s straight decision between him and Gabby I’m afraid. I think this should be a new poll! I’d give him a go if he’s fit (only MON et al can asses that).

  • Surely, with our strikers JC appart drawing a blank, it would make sense to let Luke have a run out. Also agree with Aspinall on the 4-3-3. Nice to see that with the quality we have now, dont seem to be able to work out our best team. Should pick itself on first and reserve team performances.

  • Also on the Stan poll, there is one option missing. Under great potential needs more time, should be an option — needs kick up the arse.

  • Luke has his work cut out to re-establish himself as a first team regular. Times have changed, new faces have moved in. Luke will sink or swim, like a few others who are currently deemed ‘fringe players’.

  • He will come good but may have to accept he will be understudy to John Carew, although he played on the left wing pre-injury and kept telling people he was a striker I bet he would be happy now just to get a game.

  • Agree col8. Admittedly he’s scored a few goals upon his return to reserve team football following his injury, and all credit to him for that. He certainly didn’t stand out as anything special in the two or three comeback games that I saw him play. He’s always scored goals for fun at this level, but its when he makes that huge step up to premiership football that he has to prove that he’s here to stay. Not being harsh on the lad, just realistic. The club is moving into a new era, and our ‘own’ youngsters are going to have to prove to be that little bit more special to compete and survive alongside the inevitable incoming new boys.

  • I don’t know who first mentioned the possibility of a loan deal with Luke? If it was MON then that would indicate where he fits in.
