Young and talented striker Michael Drennan has today been loaned out by Villa to League One side Carlisle United.

Drennan joins up now with manager Graham Kavanagh at Carlisle and goes straight into their squad for this weekends game against Colchester United on Saturday.

Academy Manager Brian Jones has previously described Drennan as somebody who ‘scores for fun’ and for those who follow our youth and U21 side, you will certainly know that to be the truth.

The Irishman began his scholarship with us a few years ago, and back last summer signed a two year professional deal with the club.

He came to the fore in 2012-13 especially given his strike rate and form in both the U21 campaign but also memorably in the NextGen European Champions campaign, which were unfortunately cut short by injury and he missed the last three games and still ended as second top scorer for Villa and in the whole competition.

In the U21 campaign he scored six times in eleven games, and in the NextGen he found the net six times also.

I would be very surprised, as long as he gets match time, if he doesn’t have the same impact that Jack Grealish and Samir Carruthers have had during their time out on loan so far. Graham Burke can also consider himself unfortunate that he didn’t get more time as his goal for Shrewsbury was a bit of a peach!
