James Milner has all but ruled out a move back to Villa Park where he spent last season on loan.

Martin O’Neill tried to sign him before the summer deadline closed and Milner was actually at Villa Park when Freddy Shepherd, the Newcastle chairman, pulled the plug on the move.

Milner told the Telegraph: ‘There are constant rumours about Aston Villa, but I think I’ll still be here in January, I certainly hope so. When you’re at a club like Newcastle you are going to get these sorts of rumours the whole time, but it doesn’t affect me. I’m going to concentrate on Newcastle, playing my football and getting on with the job of getting us back up the Premiership table.’

‘It’s no secret that I’m enjoying myself here this season. You enjoy your football more when you’re playing well and you play well when you’re getting a regular run in the side. I’m getting that here. The manager’s got tough decisions to make in midfield because we have a lot of quality in that area. You’ve got to play well to stay in the team, but I’m enjoying my football and I’m showing my best form. Hopefully I can continue to keep improving here.’

No worries, I’d rather Chelsea’s Shaun Wright Phillips anyway!

  • ….but if we dont get SWP he would be just what we need. Plus he is flexible for both flanks and is still very young. I hope MON works his majic on this one.

  • ‘its no secret that i’m enjoying myself this season’ ???? what, your playing for an under-performing team who struggle to score and are in the bottom 3?? i think the cold weather is getting to him !! bring on SWP instead, he’s a good player, but shaun’s a different level

  • Why the hell has Milner just proved he’s an idiot? Get real. Any player with more than 2 brain cells will say he is happy at his current club if asked. Why would he make life difficult for himself? Doesn’t mean its true. I still think he’d sign for us if we had an offer accepted.

  • No I cant see SWP moving to B6 either, although if we could land him he’d certainly add the flair and excitement which we are so sadly lacking right now. As for James Milner, you never know. He’s making the right noises to please the geordie element. If he remains at St James Park then good luck to him. We move on, so does he.

  • calm down dear it was only a statement I was just saying that he must be an idiot not to want to join Villa. I know there might be a bit of false in what he said but I was just having fun as a Villa fan

  • He’s a good player and can get better but deep down, if he really wants to stay there, then let him be – if most of us had been treated like Newcastle treated him (and villa) then I don’t think too many could forgive and forget. Always been a doubt in my mind that he’ll always lack goals though and for someone who gets into the positions he does then that could cost.

  • Any one remember Steve Foster? Said Brighton was the best club ever. 10 days later said he would walk to Birmingham to play for the Villa! Its all just words. His toon will change if they are relegated!

  • Come on guys, inject a touch of reality. Milner, like all modern football players, is a professional. He has to get on with those around him, like it or not. Do you seriously expect him to go around Newcastle with a long face, saying how pi**ed off he is to be there, and how he wishes he was at Villa Park? Even if the guy was secretly desperate to be at B6, he is under contract and has to play the game. Don’t confuse what he says with what he is thinking. His thoughts and words MAY be the same, but then again they may not.

  • This way if he does move to Villa he can always say he “wanted to stay ” but the club made the decision!

  • At the end of the day its paper talk, if Newcastle get a decnt offer he will be sold. One of the sundays had him as a makeweight for Bent at Charlton.

  • I don’t rate Milner as a finished article, but if MON thought he could improve him fair enough. SWP would be overpriced and is overrated. Darius Vassell played better than SWP has for England and should never have been sold. I’m not saying DV should be back at Villa, our aims are higher now. But DV was sold for less than he was worth, while SWP will cost more than he is worth. Nugent from Preston with Gabby on the left and a rejuvenated Luke Moore on the right will do me. The vast improvement needed to Villa’s attacking options will best come from buying 2 exciting wing backs who can defend and attack and start our football from the back.

  • We need quality – Milner’s not bad and works hard but that’s all. Will probably be playing in the Championship division in 3 years. Forget him.

  • I don’t want him. Apart from the games against Small Heath I thought he was useless for us last season. Head down, never looks up, always has to try and beat a man, not very quick, useless crosser of a ball, need I go on? He hasn’t improved from what I’ve see of him this season either. We should try everything we can to sign SWP.

  • Unfortunately stedol you could say that about every one of the Villa team last year… look where we finished and the poor performances week in week out. Not saying I want Milner but a different manager has made a big difference to a lot of players this year and maybe MON believes he can get something more out of Milner.

  • I can understand why he is happy at Newcstle, playing week in week out? Newcastle doing well in the league? Working for a great manager? i could go on. Do you think maybe he has been told we are no longer interested??

  • We should go for a young player named Edu, currently at Lyn in Norway. He came to Lyn together with Mikel (Chelsea, best player U-21 world cup), but is now considered a better prospect. Barca, Arsenal etc. chasing him, need I say more..
