MON Promises Summer Spending Spree

Martin O’Neill has stated that he will be busy in the transfer market in the summer, because his January moves didn’t materialise how he had hoped.

In an interview with the E+S O’Neill explained that he was disappointed at how January played out and although he obviously isn’t given credence to any of the rumours surrounding players coming in, Crouch, Bosingwa etc, he knows January’s failings need to be addressed in the summer if we hope to continue our growth.

‘We tried to strengthen in January – it didn’t materialise.

‘We could have got extra numbers, but I thought if we avoid certain things, that’s something I’d address in the summer if we’re going to make inroads into things.’

Fans will remember that O’Neill has previously stated he only really wants to sign players who are good enough to be first teamers on a regular basis,he’s not interested in signing players who will be back up only, and I for one agree with him.

All signings should be an improvement on what we have, not similar.

O’Neill continued:

“We`ve had a bit of luck and I wouldn`t want to tempt providence.

“But the strengthening issue is something we`ll think about closer to the time.”

I’ve seen some of the above quotes elsewhere today as justification that Villa will reknew our interest in Brad Guzan in the summer also.

Moving onto the Reading match, O’Neill reiterated his praise for Carew who is slowly starting to live up to his reputation.

“Carew`s second half performance against Reading last week was out of this world, really fantastic.

‘In the first 10 minutes he had a shot which he miscued across the goal and another one which he blazed over.

“And yet he was able to put all of those things behind him and play the second half like he did.

“Everything you see in the players is down to self-confidence – it`s down to them.’
