With the arrival of French international and former Everton left back Lucas Digne in the January transfer window as head coach Steven Gerrard began reshaping the squad to his requirements, the future of regular left back Matt Targett was instantly thrown into doubt – not least when he then made the incredibly quick departure to Newcastle United for a loan spell.

The 26-year-old former Southampton Academy graduate had a mixed time of it following his £15million arrival at Villa Park, but he did end the 2020/21 Premier League campaign as our Players’ Player of the Year given the improvement in his form and he ultimately leaves having made a total of 88 starting appearances for us, with two substitute showings and a return of three goals.

Making the switch to Newcastle, he played a further 16 times in the Premier League as they secured their safety and upon announcing today’s news, Aston Villa have confirmed the loan deal did include a buy option in their favour and that has now ultimately been activated.

The club also confirmed the fee, which is unusual, and we have received £15million for him.

I’m sure the vast majority of fans will wish him well for the future and thank him for his efforts whilst he was with us, and personally, whatever did happen to force the decision, at least he doesn’t go down as another of those players who were happy to train and pick up their wages despite never playing.

Go well Matt, just not when we next meet.
