Martin O’Neill told Sky Sports after the 2-1 loss to Manchester United in the third round of the FA Cup that on loan keeper Gabor Kiraly was ‘distraught’ in the changing room after the game.
Kiraly missed a bread and butter save from an Ole Gunnar Solskjaer strike and O’Neill said of the Hungarian:
‘He’s absolutely distraught. He came here with the best intentions in the world and we were grateful for him to come because we had a goalkeeping crisis at that stage some weeks ago. Crystal Palace gave us permission to take him on, so I’m grateful for that. He is obviously distraught as it was a goal he probably should have stopped.’
And on the game, ‘Our best spell was when we went behind and we got a bit of belief about ourselves then to go and take the game. There was no point letting the inevitable happen. We could lose two, three-nil by trying to press forward to get a goal. When we got the equalising goal we were doing absolutely fine. It was a really good spell for us culminating with the goal, from my own viewpoint, that we deserved at that stage.’
Sir Alex Ferguson, sponsored by Wrigleys Chewing gum, told his official site: ‘We’ve done that [scored a late winner] many times in the past but that was a near one today. I couldn’t see us winning after their equaliser because they were fighting so hard. We made a host of great chances but when you’re not taking them you never know if you’re going to another one. Some of the football we played was absolutely fantastic and I think we deserved to go through. But you’ve got to feel for Villa because they gave us a real test and worked very hard.’
