Well, just five days left until the January transfer window slams shut (do windows slam shut or is that just doors… oh, and does it actually matter?) and hopefully, maybe, with luck we’ll get a signing or two.

Martin O’Neill is quoted in the Sunday Mirror, amongst other papers, today refusing to be drawn on the Olof Mellberg to Juventus rumour but does hint he thinks there will be some action this week.

He told the press conference after the Blackburn draw:

‘If you ask me whether Olof Mellberg is going to Juventus now or at the end of the season, my answer is that I think we will have some news on Monday all told.’

Adding, ‘I think I’d like to have a little bit of a breather tomorrow – but then on Monday we will be talking about that and maybe, perhaps something else. The next couple of days I will be looking at what we can do because I need to make sure we are adequately placed to have enough numbers in the squad.’

‘Getting quality players has been particularly difficult, because people don’t want to give them away.’

Some are still suggesting the Jermain Defoe deal is not dead in the water, others that John Arne Riise is having showdown talks with Liverpool and has Aston Villa and Newcastle United waiting in the wings. There is also still the hint that Kevin Doyle of Reading might still be pursued in time for this months purchases.

The News of the World are claiming that we are set to swoop for 23-year-old Chivas USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan for £2million. He can apparently sign a pre-contract and although Celtic were favourites to get the goalkeeper who was voted best in the Major Soccer League last season, it now looks like Villa might have beaten the Scottish giants to the punch.

Could be an interesting few days for us, the majority of moves for the January transfer window are made in the last week and the press are hotly tipping us to be active!
